|aParents are typically devastated and go through a wide range of emotions when they learn that their child has been diagnosed with autism. It is often difficult for these parents to effectively deal with their emotions because their child's needs are so demanding. Parents of children with autism experience a great deal of stress related to their child's diagnosis and in dealing with the stress of their everyday lives. This program development dissertation describes a Parent Group Interaction (PGI) Module. The PGI Module will run in conjunction with an intensive treatment program for children with autism that is currently operating in a major hospital setting in Chicago. The PGI Module will provide a parental support group not included in the current intensive treatment program. The goals of the proposed program are to assist parents in dealing with their experience of having a child with autism, to help them deal more effectively with the stress they face on a daily basis, and to support self-care as a way to assist them in becoming more effective therapists for their autistic child. Discussion will describe support for the module from the cited literature and make recommendations for future program research
