|aWomen in Alabama account for half of the population. However, women are not as prevalent in management representing only 23% in the executive/senior level officials and managers category and 32.62% in the first/mid-level officials and managers category. Understanding the intrinsic and extrinsic barriers that hinder a woman's advancement into management was the focus of this research. The study explored the perceptions of adult students at two institutions of higher education. A survey was conducted using participants who are currently employed or were employed in a management position. The results indicate that success apprehension, early socialization, childcare stress, dual career strain, role conflict, and role expectations are a problem for women.
