This book is the culmination of the work of ASCD's Urban Middle Grades Network, Advisory Panel on Improving Student Achievement, and Improving Student Achievement Research Panel. The book is grounded in the belief that differences in student achievement are often the result of differences in the quality of instruction; if we can improve the quality of instruction, we can improve the performance of students. "Educating Everybody's Children" offers a wide-ranging assortment of instructional strategies whose effectiveness has been gleaned from extensive review of both basic and applied research. One author discusses strategies that work across the curriculum, while others discuss strategies specific to reading, writing, mathematics, and oral communication. Every strategy includes classroom examples and a list of the research studies that support it. The authors also alert educators to barriers to good instruction. Designed to promote reflection and discussion among the entire learning community, this volume also serves as a practical guide to developing a sound school program that meets the needs of students from diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a resource that educators will find themselves turning to again and again.
