This textbook explains the theory and methodology of planning athletic training. It discusses the major concepts essential to training, such as the basic concepts of the training process, the principles of training, the tactical, technical, and physical components of the process, and the variables associated with developing a training plan; the methodological concepts of training planning, including periodization of biomotor abilities, how to conceptualize and plan training sessions, methods for constructing different training cycles, designing the annual training plan, and methods for elevating performance at appropriate times; and training methods for strength and power development, endurance, and speed and agility. This edition has an expanded chapter on the integration of biomotor abilities within the training process; an expanded chapter on methods for developing muscle strength, including manipulation of loading variables and the conversion to specific strength; updates to information on training sessions, microcycles, and macrocycles; and a more detailed explanation of speed and agility training that differentiates between individual and team sports. It has expanded chapters on endurance and speed training to include recent information on testing and developing these sport performance characteristics. It also has discussions of the importance of designing the sport-specific annual plan for competition-level athletes, historical contextualization of the concept of periodization of training and clarification of terms and concepts used in theory and methodology.
