These student packets, created by an award-winning educator with 20 years of classroom experience, are ideal for an Advisory Course, Life Skills Course,or as part of a lesson in a content area course related to one of the wide variety of available topics to choose from. Students write a daily gratitude statement, are reminded to keep a growth mindset and to practice 4-7-8 breathing, answer focus questions as they watch a short video online (active links to videos included in the dcownload as well as the length of each video), write 5 facts from CNN 10 (free 10-minute news show for students), review 'I Can' statements, complete a literacy task (educators choose texts to use with the close-reading student templates provided) write daily academic and behavior goals, and reflect on their performance in school for the day. Educators need access to the internet and the ability to project the videos and news show with audio for the students. Lessons can also be selected and shared online with students. An introduction (pages 1-7) is included to explain the rationale and research for the structure and content of the student packets. Answer keys are not included for the videos because answers may vary for many questions, and teachers should preview each video before showing it to students to determine if the content is appropriate for their classroom. Additionally, the news show is different every day so it is impossible to prepare a key in advance and students' answers will vary. It is generally not difficult or time-consuming to assess students' responses, which frequently offer valuable insights about their learning and positionality as students.CONTENTS Pages 1-7: Introduction to the lessons and works cited Some of the 50 mini lesson topics: 4 Billion Years of Evolution in 6 Minutes/How to Escape Gravity (4 minutes) TED Talk/TEDedA Difference From an Unusual Place - Luis Gonzalez TED Talk (9 minutes)Adam Foss: A prosecutor’s vision for a better justice system TED Talk (16 minutes)After watching this, your brain will not be the same | Lara Boyd (14 minutes)All it Takes is 10 Mindful Minutes: Andy Puddicombe TED Talk (9 minutes)Brain Games - What you don’t know (21 minutes)Brain Games - Focus Pocus (22 minutes)Belly Breathe with Common and Colbie Callait (2 mins)4 Steps to Developing a Growth Mindset? Melissa Marini Švigelj was an educator in Cleveland (Ohio) public high schools for two decades, and taught high school students at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center four of those years. In the tradition of Brazilian educator and activist, Paulo Freire, she understands neutrality as an educator is not an option. Thus, she remains a community activist and social justice advocate. Her blog msvigeljsmith.blog is part of a national network of education bloggers, and her posts have been featured on other national and state education blog sites. Interviews with Melissa can be found in the archives of the Rick Smith Radio Show, It’s About Justice local Cleveland radio show, on the podcast Quote Unquote, and in news articles in the The Christian Science Monitor and National Public Radio’s KQED education blog, Mindshift. She presents at conferences nationwide, and has consulted on education policy locally and nationally related to social and emotional learning and on behalf of students entangled in the juvenile justice system. Currently, she is a PhD student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is most grateful for her sons and family dogs.
