This text is based on case studies written by Heads of schools from a variety of settings, each facing different problems and concerns. All of them are conscious of changing relationships between professionals in the field of education and of the need for new leadership and management skills. The issues raised are examined within four sections, covering the following areas: improving the quality of pupils' learning experience; effective staff organization and development; development of policy and the management of resources; and establishing good relationships between the Head, the school and the community.
