Every four years since 1987, an international conference has been held jointly by the Ergonomics Society (now the Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factors) and the World Commission of Science and Sport. The goal is for researchers applying the human sciences in sport and leisure, and those applying them in occupational ergonomics, to share their knowledge. The sixth was in Cheshire during November 2007, and the 26 essays here constitute its proceedings. They cover musculoskeletal loading, occupational ergonomics, sports, diet and fitness assessment, and expertise and coordination. Specific topics include manifestations of shoulder fatigue in prolonged activities involving low-force contractions, relationships between leisure-time energy expenditure and individual coping strategies for shift-work, lower limb function in the maximal instep kick in soccer, whether completing an exercise referral scheme affects anthropometric measures and physical activity levels, and fundamental movement skill development of four to six year-old pre-school children in Flanders.
