Manuel Casanova was born in Puerto Rico. His father's family came from Tenerife, Canary Islands while his mother's family came from the Azores and Madeira. As long as he has known all of his family preferred to be islanders and avoid the mainland. This tradition was broken as Manuel moved to the United States to pursue his medical education at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Quite early in his medical career Manuel decided to be a Neurologist. He followed this with training in neuropathology and then psychiatry. In research, his main focus has been the modular organization of the cerebral cortex and how the same is disturbed in some neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism. He introduced transcranial magnetic stimulation as a therapy for autism. At heart he is an electrical engineer and a Heathkit aficionado since his youth.
