To protect the quality of life of our rapidly growing global community, it is imperative to view health from a global perspective. The COVID-19 pandemic and an alarming increase in catastrophic events resulting from climate change reinforce the need for a global approach to health, an approach that must include an international understanding of health inequities and disparities that span the regions and countries of the world. Too often, however, countries from certain regions of the world are not equitably included in the global comparative health literature, favoring a more Eurocentric viewpoint. Health and Healthcare Systems: A Global View addresses the historical injustice of a lack of international diversity in the global comparative health literature. We strategically divided the core parts of this book into 13 regions that span the globe. Each region includes a brief regional overview chapter, which provides a snapshot of health and contextual factors such as history, geography, and social determinants derived from all countries within the region. Each region also includes two to four country profile chapters, which describe key health outcomes, health determinants, and health systems within the profiled countries in greater detail. By sampling two to four countries in each of the 13 regions, we ensure equitable representations from across the world. Importantly, a majority of the country profile chapters are written by people living in or who are originally from the profiled countries. In addition, the contributing writers in this book come from a wide breadth of academic programs and health professions.
