This book provides a first introduction to algebraic geometry. An amazing feature of algebraic geometry is how little it, at least initially, requires in the way of prerequisites. Yet, still, there seems to be no single book that allows students to learn all the basic concepts together with their underlying motivations and foundations. In this work, the authors' goal is not to require the level of background knowledge that most advanced texts assume. On the other hand, they do not limit the exposition to elementary concepts, but also touch on some advanced topics. The idea at the heart of the book is to explain why certain key concepts arose, and to offer beginning graduate students a comprehensive portrait of the field's logical foundations.
