This volume addresses the major challenges that cities are facing today. Ten teams of professionals from a broad range of disciplines conducted research on a single square kilometre of each of the five largest cities in the Netherlands: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Eindhoven. The outcome is inspiring visualisations and concrete prospects for action that suggest ways in which the major transitions of our time can play out in cities. Depicted through the eyes of designers and supplemented with views from edited experts, background material, and work by students from TU Delft, the future city is climate-proof, energy-efficient, and has smart mobility solutions.
