Since the 1964 publication of Adult Education: Outlines of an Emerging Field of University Study (commonly known as "the black book") the number of adult education graduate programs has grown nearly eightfold and the wealth of new data, theories, and social and environmental developments continues to increase exponentially. Now, in this volume, the foremost scholars in adult education reflect on key areas in the field where growth, change, and progress have been most significant since the black book - and they identify likely trends and possible directions for each of these areas in the next quarter century. In 16 original chapters they explore the development, accomplishments, and changes in the field over the past 27 years, and chart new directions for research, theory, and practice in the study of adult education.
