Eat Well and Keep Moving is an interdisciplinary nutrition and physical activity curriculum aimed at building lifelong healthy habits in upper elementary school students. The book focuses on classroom lessons, but it can also be used to reinforce healthy practices in the cafeteria, gymnasium, home, and community. This interdisciplinary, skill-building approach to motivating upper elementary students to eat better and stay active began as a joint research project between the Harvard School of Public Health and Baltimore Public Schools. It was proven successful in extensive field tests among students and teachers: children ate more fruits and vegetables, reduced their intake of saturated and total fats, watched less TV, and improved their knowledge of nutrition and physical activity. The program has won two awards for excellence: the United States Department of Agriculture's Promising Practice Award in 1997 and the Dannon Institute Award for Excellence in Community Nutritionä in 2000. This complete resource includes everything you need to teach students about nutrition and fitness in a classroom setting or to launch an effective schoolwide program. It includes ready-to-use materials that fit easily into any existing curriculum—classroom teachers quickly overcome any uneasiness they may have about presenting unfamiliar health topics while they build students' language arts, math, science, social studies, and physical education skills. The program includes • 44 lesson plans, • a CD-ROM that makes it easy to customize and print out lessons, units, and worksheets and contains how-tos for promoting the program in your school and community, • fun and engaging schoolwide campaigns to encourage kids to walk, watch less TV, and eat more fruits and vegetables, and • plenty of reproducibles. Eat Well and Keep Moving is a proven approach to pulling everyone together—teachers, food service staff, principals, and parents—to ensure students develop healthful habits early and stick with them throughout their lives
