Some leaning more toward language education and some leaning more toward anthropology, linguists look at language policy not as a set of abstract concepts or official documents, but as a complex of practices, ideologies, attitudes, and formal and informal mechanisms that influence people’s language choices in profound and pervasive ways. Their discussions of cases and contexts include an ethnographic study of language as cultural practice among contemporary Hopi youth, historical perspectives on colonial Namibian schooling from St. Mary’s High School at Odibo, new directions in anthropological approaches to language policy, an ethnographic perspective on bi-literacy in Maori-medium education, and bilingual vocational education in Wales. McCarty named the volume after the graduate seminar he created it for. Annotation 穢2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
