Researchers and evaluators studying adolescent behavior have developed a wide array of research instruments for use in their studies. In Handbook of Adolescent Sexuality and Pregnancy, Josefina J. Card and her coeditors simplify the work of conducting new research by providing all the tools necessary to create research instruments from existing prototypes. It contains validated instrument items from long- term surveys such as the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and the National Survey of Children for those interested in developing their own instrument. Abstracts of over 60 previously designed and field-tested instruments are also included to facilitate secondary use--with information on how to easily obtain them. Finally, two short questionnaires that can be used by adolescent care programs and prevention programs are included in their entirety. What's more, all instruments discussed in this book are in the public domain and available for immediate use. In short, this handbook contains all the tools necessary to do research in the field WITHOUT having to create, pretest, and modify a new research instrument. While specifically designed for adolescent pregnancy studies and evaluations, the material included in this resource will be invaluable for researchers conducting a wide range of studies on adolescents, sexual behavior, pregnancy, health, and families. "[This book does] a fine job of collating some of the most important survey instruments in this field as well as documenting the many existing studies that have contributed to our understanding of adolescent pregnancy. The volume will be a very useful sourcebook for program evaluators and researchers alike. It will contribute enormously to the ability of those planning new projects to build on what has gone before rather than 'reinventing the wheel.'" --Christine A. Bachrach, Center for Population Research, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development "This Handbook . . . performs a valuable service to the field in making the best measures more readily accessible to researchers and program evaluators. . . . It will become an important reference work for those who study these issues." --Brent C. Miller, Professor of Family and Human Development, Utah State University
