Research into artificial intelligence has led to specific areas of study such as Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems (IKBS). The term IKBS encompasses rather more than 'Expert Systems', including other important aspects such as intelligent front ends, speech interfaces and the general methodological issues of knowledge representation, learning and planning - topics covered by this text. This book provides an introductory treatment of IKBS. It describes the processes and rationale behind the development of systems that can give assistance in the performance of technical and professional tasks, and discussing the internal architecture of IKBS as well as their external characteristics. Worked examples, objectives, summaries, student questions and a bibliography are included. This book should be of interest to second and third year undergraduates in computer science and electrical/electronic engineering; undergraduate and postgraduate students of information technology; engineering and computing professionals.
