A collection of contemporary writing and research on the sociology of sport, exploring topics that have received limited attention in other sociology of sport texts but have been long-standing social concerns. Selections are organized in 12 units, and touch on areas such as public reactions to a racially insensitive team name, Magic Johnson and the ideology of AIDS, the construction of gender in an emerging sport, and the reinforcement of gender and status in kindergarten sport. Yiannakis directs the Laboratory for Leisure, Tourism and Sport at the University of Connecticut-Storrs; Melnick teaches physical education at the State University of New York College-Brockport.
